Rotherham Cancer Advocacy Service
Our Cancer Advocacy service is here for people across Rotherham from the day you are diagnosed onwards. We are here to listen, to support, and to help you make sense of what is in front of you, at a speed that works for you.
When things feel uncertain, we’re here
A cancer diagnosis can change everything in a moment. This is true for the person who is sick, and for the family and friends around them. It can feel like there is suddenly too much to think about. It can feel like there is not enough clear information about what comes next.
People often come to us when things feel overwhelming. This is not just because of the illness itself. It is because of everything else that comes with it:
- Too many hospital appointments.
- Too much new information.
- Big decisions to make.
- Everyday life carrying on while everything else has shifted.
We are here to help you find some steadiness. We give you someone to talk to, and someone who can help make things feel a bit more manageable.
How we support people
This is a free, one-to-one service for people affected by cancer, including family members and carers.
We take time to understand what matters most to you, and what you need help with right now. We can help you with:
- Having someone friendly to talk things through with.
- Understanding what extra support you can get locally and across the country.
- Helping you find the right services at the right time.
- Supporting you to make decisions and figure out your next steps.
- Staying alongside you as things change.
We do not tell people what to do and we do not make decisions for you. Our job is to help you understand your choices, and support you to pick what feels right for you.

How we can help
Is this support right for you?
This service is for people in Rotherham who are:
- Living with a cancer diagnosis.
- Supporting someone who has cancer.
- Trying to manage the impact cancer has on your daily life.
You can contact us at any point. There is no “right time” to reach out – we are here whenever you are ready.
What's available
How we work
Over the phone: Most of our support is done through a phone call.
Face-to-face: We can also offer in-person appointments at our Rotherham town centre office if you need it.
We are not doctors or nurses, and we do not give medical advice. What we do offer is time, clear information, and support to help you feel more able to handle what comes next.

What happens next
Once you get in touch, we will arrange a time to talk that works best for you. We will start by listening to understand what is happening in your life. Then, we will talk through what support is available.
There is zero pressure and no expectation to make decisions straight away. We work entirely at your pace.
If you are still not sure whether this is the right service for you, please still contact us. We will talk to you and help point you in the right direction.
This service is made possible through funding from Macmillan Cancer Support and the NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.
