Extra support if you have cancer and dementia

If you or a loved one are dealing with both cancer and dementia (or memory loss), getting the right healthcare can feel overwhelming. Standard hospital visits often move very fast and come with a lot of confusing paperwork. We are here to help you slow things down with a new, free service to support you, funded by Macmillan.

How we can help you

We have a dedicated, friendly helper called a Dementia-Friendly Cancer Advocate. They can meet you at the hospital, at a local community hub, or right in your own home.

Our advocate will:

  • Speak up for you: They make sure doctors and nurses understand your specific needs.
  • Explain things simply: They will break down complicated medical talk so you can make choices without feeling rushed.
  • Reduce your stress: They take time to listen to you and support you through your appointments.
  • Help family carers: We know looking after a loved one is hard work. We offer 1-to-1 support for family members and carers, too.

Additional support

Free monthly carer groups

We run a friendly, relaxed group once a month for family carers.

It is a safe place to have a cuppa, meet other people who understand, and try relaxing activities like gentle yoga and therapy sessions.

Who we work with

We work closely with local teams in Rotherham to make sure you get the best care possible, including:

  • The cancer nurses at Rotherham Hospital.
  • The hospital Macmillan Support Team.
  • Local charity groups like Making Space, Beacons, and Crossroads.
